Si Sawat: Wi-chian maat, do you see? Over there. There are people carrying ‘cha-lom’-s and some others carrying ‘dta-graa’-s to Pee Geng’s house. I don’t know whose ‘yaat-dti-goh-hoh-dti-gaa’ they are.
วิเชียรมาศ: แหม สีสวาด พูดเป็นเจ้าบทเจ้าลอนเลยนะ ญาติโกโหติกา
Wi-chian maat: Whoa Si Sawat, you’re speaking like a ‘jao-bot-jao-glon’: ‘yaat-dti-goh-hoh-dti-gaa’.
สีสวาด: ก็แน่ละสิ การพูดคำคล้องจองบางคำ มันก็ทำให้เราจำคำนั้นได้ว่าเขียนอย่างไร
Si Sawat: Of course! Speaking in rhyme on some words will make us remember how to write them.

สีสวาด: เช่น ญาติโกโหติกา นี่ไง ทำให้เรารู้ว่า คำว่า “ญาติ” หมายถึง ญาติพี่น้อง เขียนคำว่า ญาติ ตัว ต เต่า ต้องมีสระอิ
Si Sawat: ‘Yaat-dti-goh-hoh-dti-gaa’ itself is an example, right there. It tells us that the word ‘Yaat’, which means ‘relatives, is written ‘Yor’-‘aa’-‘dtor’- ‘sa-ra i’ and the ‘dtor’ must be written with a ‘sa-ra i’.
วิเชียรมาศ: แล้วคำว่า “อนุญาต” ล่ะ เขียนยังไง(อย่างไร)
Wi-chian maat: What about the word ‘A-nu-yaat’ then? How do we write it?
สีสวาด: คำนี้หละที่เขียนกันผิด ๆ คำว่า “อนุญาต” ตัว ต เต่า ไม่มีสระอิ
Si Sawat: This is the word that is often written wrongly. The ‘dtor’ in ‘A-nu-yaat’ must not be written with a ‘sa-ra i’.
วิเชียรมาศ: ทีนี้จำได้ละ
Wi-chian maat: I’ll remember this from here on out.

‘Yaat-dti-goh-hoh-dti-gaa’ (ญาติโกโหติกา), which basically means ‘relatives’, is a compound word (also called a rhyme-motivated compound) comprising the main noun ‘Yaat’, which means ‘relatives’, and rhyming elements without any meaning but are there to remind us to write the final ‘dtor’ in ‘Yaat’ with a ‘sa-ra i’.
A ‘cha-lom’ (ชะลอม) is a small cylinder shaped hand basket woven from Thai bamboo while a ‘dta-graa’ (ตะกร้า) is the typical round hand basket woven from Thai bamboo that you’ll see being used in markets and shops.
‘A-nu-yaat’ (อนุญาต) as a verb means ‘(to) allow, permit’ and as a noun it means ‘permit / consent’.
A ‘Jao-bot-jao-glon’ (เจ้าบทเจ้าลอน) is basically a person who likes to speak verse. At its widest, it conveys the sense of ‘having the heart of a poet’. Most Thais would consider themselves as ‘Jao-bot-jao-glon’-s.
