Kao Taem: You guys, are really ‘sa-maan-na-chan’. There’s no fighting among you, like there is among the cats at the front of the market.
วิเชียรมาศ: ก็พวกเราอยู่ในที่ดี มีเจ้านายดี ๆ อบรมให้เรารักกันนะซี่(สิ)
Wi-chian maat: Well, we live in a good place. We also have a very good master who trains us to love each other, you know?!
สีสวาด: ถูกแล้ว เราอยู่ด้วยกันก็ต้องรักใคร่กันจ้ะ
Si Sawat: That’s right! We’re living together and so we must love one another.
เก้าแต้ม: ฉันสงสัยทำไมมีคนพูดว่า ‘สะ-มา-นะ-ฉัน’ ไม่ใช่ ‘สะ-หมาน-นะ-ฉัน’ อย่างที่พวกเราพูดกันล่ะ
Kao Taem: I’ve got a question that’s been on my mind. Why are there people who say ‘sa-ma-na-chan’ and not ‘sa-maan-na-chan’, which is the way that we say it.
สีสวาด: ก็พูดได้ทั้งสองอย่างนั่นแหละ ‘สะ-มา-นะ-ฉัน’ ก็ถูก ‘สะ-หมาน-นะ-ฉัน’ ก็ถูก แต่ฉันชอบ ‘สะ-หมาน-นะ-ฉัน’ ฟังเป็นไทย ๆ ดี แล้วก็เหมือนคำอื่น ๆ เช่น สมาน สมอง เสมอ สมุย
Si Sawat: It can actually be said both ways: ‘sa-ma-na-chan’ is correct, and ‘sa-maan-na-chan’ is also correct but I like ‘sa-maan-na-chan’ as it sounds very ‘Thai’ and it’s pronounced the same way as some other words such as ‘sa-maan’, ‘sa-mong’, ‘sa-mer’ and ‘Sa-mui’.
ผู้บรรยาย: คำว่า สมานฉันท์ ออกเสียงว่า ‘สะ-มา-นะ-ฉัน’ ก็ได้ ‘สะ-หมาน-นะ-ฉัน’ ก็ได้ แปลว่า ความร่วมมือกัน ความไม่แตกแยกกัน
Narrator: The word ‘sa-maan-na-chan’ can be pronounced ‘sa-ma-na-chan’; it can also be pronounced as ‘sa-maan-na-chan’. It means ‘pulling or coming together’, ‘being united and not divided’.

Many beginners who have only encountered one of the meanings of ‘gat’ (กัด), i.e. ‘(to) bite’, may mistakenly think that ‘gat gan’ (กัดกัน) literally means ‘(to) bite each other / one another’. Actually, ‘gat gan’ (กัดกัน) means ‘(to) quarrel or fight’.
‘Lae’ (แหละ) is defined by Thai2English and NECTEC as ‘particle giving a sense of “this / that very one; exactly this / that one; this / that one in particular”’ and ‘particle used at the end of a statement to emphasize it’ respectively.
