รู้รักภาษาไทย: Cat Cartoons: Episode Eleven…
ผู้บรรยาย: ตอน ปลาทูน่า
Narrator: Episode – Tuna
วิเชียรมาศ: เห็นเราไม่ว่าอะไร เอาปลาทูน่ามาให้กิน เราไม่ใช่แมวฝรั่งสักหน่อย
Wi-chian maat: Seeing as I don’t say anything much, she’s feeding us tuna. We’re not foreign cats!
สีสวาด: บ่นอะไรจ๊ะวิเชียรมาศ
Si Sawat: Brown Cat, what are you going on about?
วิเชียรมาศ: บ่นยายแม้นสิ เอาปลาทูน่ามาให้กิน เราชอบปลาทู ปลาทูธรรมดา ธรรมดา ไม่ใช่ปลาทูน่า เราชอบกินปลาทู
Wi-chian maat: I’m talking about Yaai Maen. She’s feeding us tuna. We love mackerel, just your plain ole mackerel, not tuna! We just love eating mackerel.
สีสวาด: ยายแม้นแกเข้าใจผิด คิดว่าเป็นปลาทูนะสิ เขาเขียนที่กล่องว่า ปลาทูนา ยายแม้นก็เลยเข้าใจว่าเป็นปลาทูที่มาจากท้องนา
Si Sawat: Yaai Maen may have got it all wrong. Maybe she thought that it was mackerel. `Bplaa too-naa’ is written on the box so Yaai Maen must have misunderstood it to mean ‘bplaa too’ (‘mackerel’) (from the) ‘naa’ (‘paddy fields’).
วิเชียรมาศ: ปลาทูเป็นปลาทะเลจะไปอยู่ในนาได้ยังไงกัน
Wi-chian maat: Mackerel is a saltwater fish, how can it live in paddy fields?
สีสวาด: นั่นนะสิ ปลาทูในนาไม่มี มีแต่ปลาทูน่าในทะเล
Si Sawat: That’s exactly the point, there is no mackerel in the paddy fields. There’s only tuna in the sea.
ผู้บรรยาย: ทั้งปลาทูและปลาทูน่าเป็นปลาทะเล แต่เป็นปลาคนละชนิดกัน
Narrator: Both mackerel and tuna are saltwater fish, but each is a different species.
แมวทั้งสามตัว: แล้วพบกันใหม่นะครับบบ (ครับ)
All Three Cats: See you again next time!

Comments…
This is the first episode that the cat simply referred to as the ‘Brown Cat’ in previous episodes, is called by his actual name, and that is ‘Wi-chian maat’ (วิเชียรมาศ).
‘Wi-chian’ (วิเชียร) means ‘lightning / diamond / Indra’s weapon’. ‘Maat’ (มาศ) means ‘gold / sulphur’. The Thai, known in Thailand as the ‘wi-chian maat’ (วิเชียรมาศ), is a newly classified but old cat breed, related to but distinct from the modern Western Siamese cat. This natural breed, descended from the landrace of cats of Thailand, has also been variously called Old-style, Traditional and Classic Siamese. (Adapted from wiki: Thai Cat) It is interesting to note however that according to Wikipedia, ‘wi-chian maat’ (วิเชียรมาศ) when used as the name of the said cat breed, means ‘moon diamond’. In this series, ‘Wi-chian maat’ (วิเชียรมาศ) is used as the name of a cat, i.e. the wi-chian maat. It is not used as a person’s name.
In Thai, it’s common for a kinship term such as ‘yaai’ (ยาย) (meaning ‘maternal grandmother’) to be used as an honorific before the name of a lady much older than we are (approximately the same age as our own maternal grandmother). We use it to show respect. This term must be used only in respect of old women. They need not be related to us, in fact they may even be total strangers. The term may also be used as a personal pronoun.
In Thai, people are usually called by their nicknames only. ‘Maen’ (แม้น) is a nickname for females. In this dialogue, ‘Yaai Maen’ (ยายแม้น) literally means ‘Granny Maen’.
‘Bplaa too-naa’ (ปลาทูน่า) is tuna (literally ‘tuna fish’). ‘Too-naa’ (ทูน่า) is one word (please note the spelling). ‘Bplaa too’ (ปลาทู) on the other hand, is mackerel (literally ‘mackerel fish’). ‘Naa’ (นา) can mean ‘paddy field’. If we wanted to say ‘mackerel from the paddy fields’ in Thai (in normal circumstances there would be no reason to say this because mackerel is a saltwater fish) then this would be written as ปลาทูนา (please note the spelling).
