Si Sawat: ‘Sak-ga-waa’, ‘daao jor-ra-kay’ moves its head downwards to the bottom and its tail upwards, in the sky.
On a waning moon night, the stars can clearly be seen sparkling. A multitude of widely scattered dew droplets dazzle brilliantly.

สีสวาด: อ่านบทสักวาจ้ะ พี่ก้อยเขาเขียนไว้แล้วมันปลิวลงมาจากโต๊ะ ฉันก็เลยเก็บเอามาอ่าน
Si Sawat: I am reading a ‘sak-ga-waa’ verse copied out by P’ Goi that flew off the table. I picked it up and read it.

เก้าแต้ม: ทำไมถึงบอกว่า ดาวจระเข้ก็เหหก
Kao Taem: What is it that makes you say that the ‘daao jor-ra-kay’ moves its head downwards to the ground?

สีสวาด: เห แปลว่า เบนออกไปจากที่เดิม ส่วน หก ในที่นี้ แปลว่า เบนหัวลงมาอยู่ข้างล่าง เหมือนที่เด็กๆ เขาเล่นหกคะเมน เอาหัวลงเอาเท้าชี้ฟ้านั่นแหละจ้ะ
Si Sawat: ‘Hay’ means ‘to move away from the original position’ whereas ‘hok’ means ‘(to) move the head downwards to the bottom’ like when kids do a headstand or handstand and their heads are down below and their feet are pointing straight up to the sky.

Brown Cat: The word ‘hok’ has many different meanings such as ‘hok lom’ (หกล้ม) [‘(to) fall over’], ‘hok-ka-mayn’ [‘(to) do a headstand or handstand’], ‘nam’ (น้ำ) [(some) liquid (literally ‘water’)] ‘hok’ (หก) [‘spilled’] and ‘layk’ (เลข) (‘number’) ‘hok’ (หก) [‘six (6)’].

‘Sak-ga-waa’ (สักวา) is a type of Thai poem.

‘Daao jor-ra-kay’ (ดาวจระเข้) is a Thai name for The Big Dipper. ‘Daao’ (ดาว) means ‘star’ and ‘jor-ra-kay’ (จระเข้) means ‘crocodile’, so ดาวจระเข้ literally means ‘crocodile star’.

The Big Dipper is one of the most easily recognizable asterisms in the night sky, found in the northern constellation Ursa Major (Great Bear). It is well known in many cultures and goes by many names, among them the Plough, the Great Wagon, Saptarishi, and the Saucepan. In Thailand it is known as the Crocodile Star. The Big Dipper is often confused for the constellation Ursa Major itself and its name used synonymously with the Great Bear. However, the Big Dipper is not itself a constellation, only the most visible part (seven of the brightest stars) of Ursa Major. Ursa Major is the third largest of all Eighty Eight constellations. A constellation is an officially recognized group of stars as defined by the International Astronomical Union. An asterism, on the other hand, is a popular grouping of stars easily recognized by the casual star observer. The Big Dipper is circumpolar in most of the northern hemisphere, which means that it does not sink below the horizon at night. As a result of the Earth’s rotation, Ursa Major appears to rotate slowly counterclockwise at night around the north celestial pole.
