แมวสีน้ำตาล: ตำรวจมาบ้านข้าง ๆ ทำไมน่ะ

Brown Cat: Why are the police at the house next door?



สีสวาด: เมื่อคืนนี้ มีพวกตีนแมวเข้าไปโขมยของในบ้าน ของหายไปหลายอย่างเลย

Si Sawat: Last night, some ‘dteen maew’ broke in and stole some things in their house. A lot of stuff went missing.



แมวสี น้ำตาล: พวกตีนแมว หมายถึงพวกขโมยใช่ไหม 

Brown Cat: When you say ‘dteen maew’, you mean ‘cat burglars’, right? 


สีสวาด: ใช่ เป็นพวกขโมยที่แอบย่องไปขโมยข้าวของยามเจ้าของเขาเผลอ

Si Sawat: Yes, they are burglars who sneak into people’s houses to steal their stuff without their being aware of it.

แมวสีน้ำตาล: คนนี่แปลกนะ ทำไมเรียกพวกขโมยว่า พวกตีนแมว แมวอย่างเราไปเกี่ยวอะไรด้วย
Brown Cat: People are strange, aren’t they? Why do they call cat burglars ‘dteen maew’ (literally ‘cat’s feet’)? What’s it got to do with us cats? 


สีสวาด: คงเป็นเพราะพวกเรามีฝีเท้าเบาเวลาเดิน จึงไม่มีเสียงฝีเท้า พวกขโมยเวลา 
ไปขโมยก็พยายามไม่ให้เจ้าของบ้านได้ยินเสียง จึงเปรียบว่า เดินได้เบาเหมือนมีตีนแมว
Si Sawat: It’s probably because we tread softly when we walk, so much so that our footsteps make no sound. When burglars go to rob a house, they will try not to make any sound that the house owner could hear so it’s likened to walking around softly as if they had cat’s feet.

ผู้บรรยาย: คำว่า ตีนแมว ไม่ใช่คำหยาบ แต่เป็นคำที่มีความหมายเฉพาะ หมายถึง คนที่เดินเบา ๆ เข้าไปขโมยของของผู้อื่น

Narrator: The word ‘dteen maew’ is not an impolite word, it merely has a specific meaning. It means someone who walks around softly when breaking into a place to steal someone else’s belongings.

แมวทั้งสามตัว: แล้วพบกันใหม่นะครับบบ (ครับ)

It is interesting to note that the Royal Society Dictionary (“RSD”) defines ตีน as อวัยวะส่วนล่างสุดของคนหรือสัตว์ นับตั้งแต่ใต้ข้อเท้าลงไป สำหรับยืนหรือเดินเป็นต้น (basically as ‘feet’) and does not specifically state that it is considered an impolite word. The RSD does however define เท้า as ตีน (ใช้ในความสุภาพ) (basically the polite form of ‘feet’). This means that by implication, ตีน is the impolite form of the word ‘feet’. In practice, many Thais consider the word ตีน as an impolite word. To many Thais, เท้า and ตีน are the polite and impolite forms of the word ‘feet’.
