Kao Taem: Today I was playing around the street entrance where I ran into a goose.
It ran up to me and it looked like it was going to nip at me!
สีสวาด: เจ้าของห่านผมขาวๆ ใช่ไหมจ๊ะ
Si Sawat: The owner of the goose has really white hair, right?
เก้าแต้ม: ใช่จ้า ผมขาวๆ ขาวเหมือน เหมือนอะไรน้า
Kao Taem: Yeah, really white hair! White like a…, uh, what do you call that again?!
สีสวาด: เขาเรียกว่าขาวเหมือนดอกเลา
Si Sawat: They call it “as white as wild sugarcane flower clusters”
เก้าแต้ม: ใช่ๆ ผมขาวเหมือนดอกเลา ทำไมเขาพูดว่า ผมขาวเหมือนดอกเลาล่ะ
Kao Taem: Yeah, that’s right! Hair as white as wild sugarcane flower clusters. Why do they say that, that hair is as white as wild sugarcane flower clusters?
แมวสีน้ำตาล: ดอกเลาเป็นยังไงอะจ๊ะ
Brown Cat: What do the flower clusters of the wild sugarcane look like?
สีสวาด: ดอกเลาก็คือ ดอกของต้นเลา เธอเคยเห็นต้นเลาไหม เขาว่าเป็นไม้ล้มลุก ฉันเคยเห็นขึ้นเป็นแถวริมทาง
Si Sawat: The flower clusters of the wild sugarcane are basically the flowers of the wild sugarcane. Have you ever seen a wild sugarcane plant? They say that it’s a herbaceous plant. I’ve seen it growing in rows along the side of the road.
เก้าแต้ม: ดอกเลาสีขาว ๆ เหมือนผมคนแก่หรือจ๊ะ
Kao Taem: Are the flowers of the wild sugarcane really white, like the hair of old people?
สีสวาด: ใช่ ดอกเลาสีขาว เขาจึงเอามาเปรียบกับผมคนแก่ที่มีสีขาวว่า ผมขาวเป็นดอกเลา
Si Sawat: Yes, the flowers of the wild sugarcane are white. That’s why they are compared to the white hair of old people, that is then referred to as “hair as white as wild sugarcane flower clusters”.
ผู้บรรยาย: ถ้าผมเริ่มขาว ไม่เรียกว่าผมขาวเหมือนดอกเลา ผมขาวหมือนดอกเลาคือขาวทั้งศีรษะ มีดำแซมบ้าง
Narrator: If someone’s hair is just beginning to turn white, we don’t say that their hair is as white as wild sugarcane flower clusters. Hair as white as wild sugarcane flower clusters must be white all over, with just some streaks of black.
